Known in Your Bones

Known in Your Bones - an arts and heritage project that shines a light on the 'Sunshine Vitamin’ D, revealing its all-powerful influence on and in all of our lives.

KNOWN IN YOUR BONES | PODCAST [2022]

To mark the Summer Solstice 2022, All Change launched a series of 5 podcast episodes - take a fortnightly journey through the story of sunshine and Vitamin D through five different lenses - migration, food, equality, health and nature. Each episode features a mix of women’s voices, sharing original poetry and stories, offering food for thought and provocations, mixed with historical information, scientific facts, evocative sounds and music.

The Known in Your Bones Podcast series has been created by women of all ages working with Associate Producer & Researcher - Abira Hussein and Associate Artists - Francesca Beard, Marysa Dowling and Mila Sanders. Sound and Podcast production - Tony Nwachukwu. Young Ambassadors - Tolu, Almase, Emma, Katya, Grace, Mariam, Toni, Ambia.

The importance of Vitamin D and the benefits or otherwise of sunshine are current, relevant and sometimes controversial topics, particularly in diverse inner-city communities. Breastfeeding women, children under 5, those with low exposure to sun - including those who cover skin for religious or cultural reasons, and those with darker skin are particularly at risk of being deficient in Vitamin D. Research has shown that only between April and October is their enough sunlight to make vitamin D in the UK - and this is only for those with fairer skin. Those with darker skin can only make enough from sunlight if they are closer to the equator. Known in Your Bones, takes a journey back in time to explore and compare attitudes to the subject, looking at a range of extraordinary archives and collections, collecting stories from the local community to learn more about ourselves, London and those who live and have lived here, and what we have in common.

The project was supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund delivered in partnership with London Metropolitan Archives [LMA], Museum of London and Wellcome Collection. It saw young women developing arts and heritage skills, undertaking research, engaging their local community in the conversation and creating work for public audiences - including a Festival of Sunshine at the Story Garden in 2021 and for publication as a series of Podcasts.
