Did you know?
The month of March marks two global events with equality at their heart - the Spring Equinox on the 21st and International Women’s Day on the 8th.

Spanning hundreds of years before the advent of medicine, women have developed home remedies and herbal medicines to treat diseases. The knowledge of this was often passed down through recipe books and oral histories. Women would add to these from their own knowledge or what they had learnt from others.

There are stories of exceptional women that faced prolonged opposition from men within their field. We have discovered the remarkable stories of Dr Cecilia Payne, an astrophysicist that changed our understanding of the sun and Dr Cecily Williams who worked in Ghana and Malaysia. Her practice of listening to local women helped to recognise a disease that was having a devastating effect on children and that was being wrongly diagnosed in the medical community.

Archives have shown us the ways women across the ages nurture and heal themselves, interrogate the intricacies of the Universe and medicine, creating a better and more equal world for others.
