NOMAD

NOMAD is led by All Change Associate Producer Abira Hussein and supported by the NESTA Amplified programme. It is delivered in partnership with Mnemoscene, Somali Youth for Integrity, Islington Somali Community and the British Museum.

Originally developed by Abira Hussein working in partnership with Mnemoscene, NOMAD explores the creative use of immersive and web-based technology to reconnect communities with Somali cultural heritage. Nomad is a community-generated and owned digital archive containing 3D objects, photographs and oral history recordings from the Somali community in the UK. This new phase of the project focuses on working with older and young people of Somali heritage to explore storytelling – both generating and capturing stories, and connecting these to heritage objects digitally. The intention is also to find ways to engage and train local young people to use the tools needed to capture, collect and digitise heritage materials (such as photogrammetry) and to make them accessible through WebAR. The project is one of 13 across the country funded under NESTA’s new 12-month Amplified programme, which includes an Accelerator programme and mentoring from Kati Price, Head of Digital Media at the V&A. To date the project has included a series public workshops with Associate Artist Francesca Beard at the Digital Design Festival at the V&A, Moz Fest 19, an Arts Marketing Association digital event, and a community workshop in Somalinimo (till I Dhimo) an installation of a 90s Somali living room by artist Amina Jama at Free Word.
