islington’s pride - PRIDE OF PLACE & 50 Pink plaques

The borough of Islington is the cradle of the LGBTQ+ rights movement in Britain. It has been the home to many diverse and important people, places, and organisations since before the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967.

Throughout the project we have collected objects and ephemera that tell the rich history of the borough: newspaper articles, club flyers, community magazines, campaign posters and more. With over 4,000 items in the collection, our archive is overflowing with objects that tell the story of queer Islington.

The home of the London Lesbian and Gay Centre, the Gay Liberation Front, the TV/TS Group, Switchboard and Stonewall. The place where everyone went out – the Carved Red Lion, Trade and longstanding venues like Central Station.

Come and learn about some of the heritage on your doorstep at Islington Museum from 21 June, at our new exhibition Pride of Place, explore our new digital map and keep an eye out for 50 pink plaques appearing across Islington in June.

Islington’s Pride is a project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Islington Council.
