Safe/Selamat

An international collaboration between artists in the UK and Malaysia exploring safety, creative risk and reward.

Supported by the British Council.

If we want to change our world, we need to risk change. To take risks, we need to feel safe. Safety is the starting point for creative risk - but safety means very different things to different people, depending on who and where you are in the world.

What does safety mean to you?

Artists Francesca Beard (UK) and Priya K (Malaysia) spent six weeks with a community of young artists, writers and activists based in the UK and Malaysia, sharing stories that will not forgive silence. They explored creative freedom, the importance of first securing your own oxygen mask and how we can support radical listening across borders.

Together the have created a collection of ideas, prompts, exercises and considerations to support the creation of safe spaces in which to make and to listen online. shared alongside a body of original new poetry and writing.
