#Islington4Women
All Change with Islington Play Association and Islington Council - is a founder member of #Islington4Women – a voluntary and public sector coalition of women leaders, which includes local cross-party politicians, and aims to improve the lives of women in Islington and to promote equality.
#Islington4Women brings women who can make a difference together, to find ways to ensure Islington is the best it can be - a place where women are comfortable, supported, encouraged, empowered and inspired.
Since its inception #Islington4Women has held a series of events to discuss and capture ideas which will address issues of concern for women and celebrate their achievements. A Town Hall event in November 2018, attended by Emily Thornberry MP, and an intergenerational International Women’s Day event in March 2019 - in partnership with the Good Women Network - have established 5 recommendations and 5 work areas for 2019 onwards. International Women’s Day 2020 on 5 March 2020, saw the launch #BoldBraveWonderWomen of Islington at Odeon Luxe & Dine - a project to create a unique book - a collection of stories of remarkable Islington women from history and the present day, chosen by Islington women to inspire this and future generations.
QUILT OF KINDNESS
International Women’s Day 2021
To mark International Women’s Day 2021 #Islington4Women invited women in Islington to join in the creation of a digital patchwork #QuiltofKindness.
The Quilt was shared on Instagram on 8 March 2021. A printed version will be displayed at Islington Town Hall as soon as it is safe for us all to gather together.
Women were invited to contribute a square on the theme of kindness – including photography, sewing, embroidery, knitting, painting, drawing, writing and collage.
A postcard print of the quilt is being sent to every contributor, and to schools, community and women’s groups in Islington.
Why a Quilt? - Since the nineteenth Century, quilting bees have brought women together to help each other and socialise whilst working on a shared project. A quilt is a material representation of women’s activism. Quilting stitches layers of material together - a way to bring different people, ideas, patterns, experiences into one whole.
A quilt can bring comfort and warmth, commemorate a life or occasion, and show solidarity and kindness.
