Young People Respond to Exhibitions at the Photographers’ Gallery

During our visit to the Photographers’ Gallery in May 2007, the Inspire! group met Janice McLaren, Head of Education and Projects, who showed us around the exhibitions. Janice told us about the Gallery’s Teen Talk programme and invited the group to take part. Shanice and Evelyn took on the challenge!

For their Teen Talk, Shanice and Evelyn chose the ‘From Emperor to Military Dictator: Shemelis Desta’s Ethiopian Archive 1963-1982’ exhibition. After attending the Private View at the Photographers’ Gallery and doing their research into the exhibition, Shanice and Evelyn were fully prepared for their Teen Talk…

On Saturday 6 October 2007 at 3pm, Shanice and Evelyn presented their Teen Talk to a large crowd of visitors. The Photographers’ Gallery were delighted with Shanice and Evelyn’s Teen Talk and the audience gave some excellent feedback.

What is a Teen Talk?

The main aim of Teen Talks is to offer audiences new perspectives on the exhibitions, based on young people’s experiences and ideas. The talks take place within the exhibition spaces at 3pm on Saturdays or Sundays and are part of a wider series of talks by a variety of experts and enthusiasts. Each young person is invited to research, develop and deliver a twenty minute talk on an exhibition.

She/he is offered various types of support including opportunities to attend private views; meet the exhibiting artist/photographer (when possible); attend talks or events related to the exhibition; meet and discuss the exhibition with a Gallery curator; and do a dry run-through of their talk with Gallery staff, in order to receive feedback and further suggestions.
