Painted Portraits
Photography artist, Leticia Valverdes, worked with people from migrant communities who use Islington Council’s NRPF (No Recourse to Public Funds) service to develop a series of ‘painted portraits’. Participants worked with Leticia to develop portraits of themselves and their families as they wish to be seen. Inspired by a traditional Brazilian technique, the photographs are then enhanced by painting onto the black and white image. The images from the project were exhibited at a special event Generations – At the End of the Rainbow, in partnership with Nitro at Free Word on 9 March 2011. An exhibition and book are planned for later this year.
