MyPlace @ Hornsey Road Baths, Islington 2009 >
Islington has been successful in securing £3.5 million of MyPlace funding (a DCSF fund managed by Big Lottery) to develop a new, world-class performing arts centre for young people in the old laundry rooms and wash house of Hornsey Road Baths which will open in Summer 2011.
The centre will make a real difference to the lives and prospects of young people in the area, raising their ambitions and aspirations, and opening up new and exciting opportunities. The centre will also offer information, advice, guidance and support.
14 Young Advisors have been employed to carry out a creative consultation with young people and the local community to make sure the building meets your needs, and to work with the architects to design the new building.
Through July and August 2009 the Young Advisors, supported by All Change, ran a series of activities designed to find out your ideas for the design of the centre and the activities that will happen in it. They presented their findings on 3 September 2009 to stakeholders.
The young advisors worked as the design team with the architects Van Heynigen and Haward and designer Morag Myerscough to design the new centre based on the consultation findings.
Work is now underway to develop a programme of outreach projects for young people in the lead up to the centre opening in summer 2011 and construction is underway.
